Find a manga by description, genre and tags

Turn what you remember into filters: the type (manga, manhwa or manhua), a genre or two, a few tags such as Isekai, Villainess or Time Loop, and roughly when it came out. MangaTrace searches AniList with those filters and shows matching titles with covers, so you can spot the one you read.

Or pick a type, genre or tag above. Results come live from AniList.

How do you find a manga you only half remember?

Turn the memory into four filters: where it is from, one broad genre, one or two specific tags, and a rough start year. Then sort by popularity. Most titles people try to find again were shared widely, so they sit near the top once the filters are right.

Turn what you remember into filters

  • Type means country. Manga is Japanese, manhwa is Korean, manhua is Chinese. Black-and-white pages read right to left point to manga. A full-colour vertical scroll points to manhwa or manhua. Not sure? The guide to manga vs manhwa vs manhua explains the signs.
  • Genres are broad. There are fewer than twenty, such as Action, Fantasy, Romance and Slice of Life. Pick the one that fits best.
  • Tags are specific. There are hundreds, such as Elf, Dungeon, Villainess, Time Loop, Cultivation or Office. Tags carry most of the detail you remember.
  • Start year narrows it down. Give a range, not one year. Your memory of when you read it is usually a year or two off.
  • Status helps with long series. If it was still coming out when you read it, choose Releasing.

Example searches we ran

These are real searches against AniList data. Your results may differ as new titles are added.

  1. "A Japanese fantasy about an elf mage, a few years old." Manga, Fantasy, tag Elf, start 2019 to 2021, sorted by popularity. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End came up first.
  2. "A Korean one where hunters clear dungeons." Manhwa, Fantasy, tag Dungeon. Solo Leveling came first and Tower of God second.
  3. "A Japanese comedy with an assassin." Manga, Comedy, tag Assassins. The top five mixed Chainsaw Man, One Piece, Spy x Family and Sakamoto Days. A broad tag on its own is not enough. Add a start year or a second tag to narrow it.

When filters are not enough

Filters work best with a plan; the guide on how to find a manga you forgot the name of shows which details to start with. If you still can't find it, ask people. The help threads on r/manga and r/manhwa are good at this. Read each subreddit's rules first. Most want a flair or tag on the post. Include:

  • the type and roughly when you read it,
  • what the main character looks like and does,
  • one scene you remember clearly,
  • any picture you have, even a blurry one,
  • titles you already ruled out.

Have a picture after all? The manga finder by image and the manhwa finder are usually faster than filters. The guide on finding a manga from a picture walks through it.

Where the data comes from

Data from AniList. Each search runs live from your browser to AniList, and nothing is copied or stored by MangaTrace. Results are always non-adult. Read and buy links come only from official platforms that AniList lists for each title.

Questions people ask

Can I search a manga by its plot?

Not by typing a full plot sentence. AniList, the database behind the tool, has no full-text plot search, and the keyword box matches titles only. Instead, translate the plot into tags: "girl reborn as the villain" becomes Reincarnation plus Villainess. Two or three accurate tags usually narrow it to a short list.

What is the difference between genres and tags?

Genres are a short fixed list of broad categories, such as Action, Romance or Fantasy. Tags are hundreds of specific labels for settings, tropes and characters, such as Isekai, Cultivation or Female Protagonist. In MangaTrace every selected genre and tag must match, so adding many quickly narrows the results to zero.

Which tag do I use for "the MC regresses" or "OP MC"?

AniList has no Regression or Overpowered tag. For a hero sent back in time, use Time Loop or Time Manipulation, often with Reincarnation. For an overpowered lead, choose Action plus Super Power and sort by popularity. Villainess, Isekai, Cultivation and Revenge are real tags and match those stories closely.

Why don't adult titles show up?

MangaTrace keeps every search safe for work. The tool asks AniList only for titles not marked adult and leaves out the Hentai and Ecchi genres, so some mainstream titles with fan service will not appear either. That is a deliberate trade-off, and we would rather say so than hide it.
